If you are on any type of social media platform, you most likely would have seen the significant shift in funeral trends as things increasingly take a turn for the glamorous. We have seen Maseratis, choppers, more flowers than that found in a garden and so on.
These trends beg the question, what do we REALLY need for a burial?
We have been in the funeral business for 35 years, so we have seen many trends come and go. As society has become more social and luxury lifestyles are promoted on social media platforms, this social shift has permeated all aspects of our lives. Have you seen the baby showers on Instagram? You would swear that some of those showers are a whole wedding.
As we have become more expressive and expensive in celebrating life’s moments, this way of living has also extended to burial services. Which should not be surprising as death is part of the life journey, and it is important that the friends and family left behind are able to celebrate in a manner that allows them to honour their beloved departed. If your loved one was into finer things in life or if they lived a legendary life, then by all means have all the bells and whistles that they would appreciate. Bring out the doves, luxury cars, go all out with the flowers, and give them the sendoff that is fit for them.
With that being said, if you prefer the simpler things in life or if your budget is limited you do not have to anxiously add every burial feature, stick to what is necessary. Here is a quick list of the things that are necessary;
- A mortuary
- Casket
- Enlarged image (A2 size is sufficient for intimate burials)
- Flowers (you can keep these basic or elaborate)
- A hearse
- Cemetery
- Basic meal for attendees (this is usually necessary in African burials)
- Family cars (if you do not have enough cars at home)
- A basic service at a church, hall or a tent at home.
So whether you decide to go full glam or keep it minimalistic, just remember that at the end of the day it is all about honouring a loved one and celebrating a life. Simply do what works best for you and your family.
